Black History Month observance commemorates The Birth of African-American Culture
The theme for this years celebration of Black History Month at the University of Georgia is Imagine: The Birth of African-American Culture.
Events and presentations are being sponsored and planned by several campus units and coordinated by the African-American Cultural Center, part of Minority Services and Programs.
Governor taps two faculty for new commission to promote historical tourism
The Vinson Institute of Government is taking a lead role in helping create a strategy for promoting historical tourism as a rural economic development tool in Georgia. Vinson Institute faculty members Ed Jackson and Mary Stakes were recently sworn in as members of the Governors Commission on Georgia History and Historical Tourism. Gov. Roy Barnes named Jackson to chair the 40-member group. The institute has been designated as the official staff for the new commission.
Athena Grand Opera Company presents Mozarts The Marriage of Figaro
This years production by the Athena Grand Opera Company is Mozarts beloved Marriage of Figaro. It is the fourth cooperative venture of the Classic Center and the UGA School of Music. The opera will be directed by Stephanie Pierce and conducted by Mark Cedel, and the chorus will be under the direction of Allen Crowell. All three are faculty members in the music school.

American poet Nikki Giovanni appears on campus this week, lecturing and giving readings of her works. Her presentation is free and open to the public.
Giovanni will speak at 7 p.m. on Feb. 13 in Georgia Hall of the Tate Student Center. Tickets are required for the lecture; they are free and available in advance from the cashiers window at the Tate Student Center. Her appearance is sponsored by University Union.
UGA expands its academic program at Gwinnett University Center
UGA courses and degree programs offered at the Gwinnett University Center will be subject to the same academic standards as the curriculum offered on UGAs main campus, according to policies approved by the University Council at its Jan. 31 meeting.
The policies open the way for UGA to offer upper-level undergraduate courses that will enable Gwinnett University Center students to receive baccalaureate degrees from UGA.
