recognition of Black History Month, is free and open to the public.
First elected to the state Senate in 1990, Walker is now serving his fifth term as representative of the 22nd District, which includes portions of Richmond County. In 1996, he became the first African American to be elected majority leader.
Prior to being elected to the Senate in 1990, Walker served four terms in the state House of Representatives, where he successfully sponsored legislation to create and fund a state economic development corporation to assist in the establishment of small and minority businesses.
As a senator, Walker serves as secretary of the Appropriations and Health and Human Services committees, and as a member of the Natural Resources, Reapportionment, and Rules committees. He is a member of the Governors Commission on Health Care Reform and the State Commission on Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Service Delivery. Additionally, Walker represents Georgia on both the Human Resources Committee of the Southern Legislative Conference and the Human Services Committee of the National Conference of State Legislatures.
He serves on the board of trustees at Augusta State University and is a trustee at Morris Brown and Paine colleges, as well as the Morehouse School of Medicine.
In 1999, Walker received the Martin Luther King Distinguished Service Award. Additional honors include a Public Service Award from the Mental Health Association and Legislator of the Year from the Georgia Public Health Association, both in 1993.
A Burke County native, Walker served in the U.S. Navy and earned a degree in business administration from Augusta College in 1974. Today he is president and chief executive officer of the Augusta-based Walker Group, which has holdings in construction, newspaper publishing and temporary staffing.
