Holiday schedule remains unchanged

The university cabinets decision to make Memorial Day one of the universitys 12 official holidays this year and in 2003 and 2004 will stand, President Michael F. Adams has told the Staff Council.
The council had asked Adams to reconsider the decision in light of a poll of staff members that showed a strong preference for Christmas Eve as an official holiday instead of Memorial Day.
In a letter to Staff Council President Brenda Keen, Adams said the cabinet has made considerable efforts to set an operating schedule which gives our employees the opportunity to enjoy traditional holidays and take well-deserved breaks without disrupting core university functions. The cabinet particularly was determined to preserve the traditional week-long break between Christmas and New Years Day--a break not enjoyed by other schools and state agencies, Adams said.
Adams also pointed out that many university personnel in such units as public safety, computer support, physical plant, athletics and development must continue to work during the holiday season.
No [holiday] schedule will please all employees, Adams noted. However, I support the vote of the cabinet, and I do believe that in setting the holidays for a number of years in the future, that departments and employees working within them will be better able to plan and prepare their respective staffing and personal schedules.
Adams added that he and the senior vice presidents will urge unit heads to remain sensitive to the needs of their personnel.
University officials expect that with Memorial Day as an official holiday, many employees will take Christmas Eve as an annual leave day.
