NYU receives record-breaking gift
New York University recently received a gift of $150 million, the largest cash donation in its history, from Julius Silver, a 1922 graduate of the university, who died in January at 101 years old.
The donation will go into an endowment fund bearing the name of the Silver family and will be used to endow approximately 150 faculty chairs over the next 25 years. The endowment will also be used for undergraduate scholarships in NYUs College of Arts and Sciences.
Profs book under institutional review
Michael A. Bellesiles, a history professor at Emory University, along with university officials, have requested a formal investigation of the allegations against him of research misconduct.
Bellesiles is author of Arming America: The Origins of a National Gun Culture, which won the Bancroft Prize. Recently, however, the book has been under attack by people who question the authors research methods and the reliability of his findings. Bellesiles continues to defend the books integrity and conclusions.
