Former U.N. commissioner wins Delta Prize for Global Understanding

Refugees, has been selected as the 2002 recipient of the Delta Prize for Global Understanding. Ogata was chosen for her long-standing commitment to human rights.
Established with an $890,000 grant from the Delta Air Lines Foundation, the Delta Prize is administered by the Center for Humanities and Arts and the Center for International Trade and Security at the University of Georgia. Nominees are solicited from around the world. Selected UGA students research the nominees for the international selection board that meets annually to choose the recipient.

Engelmann Professor of Botany at Washington University, St. Louis, will deliver this years Odum Lecture at 11:15 a.m. March 8 in Masters Hall of the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. His topic will be Biodiversity, Extinction, and Sustainability.
One of Time magazines Heroes for the Planet, Raven is a renowned botanist and conservationist and winner of the National Medal of Science, the highest award for scientific accomplishment in the country. He is currently serving as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The annual lecture is named in honor of Eugene Odum, Callaway Professor Emeritus of Ecology.
Limited hiring freeze goes into effect
At the most recent cabinet meeting, on Feb. 20, President Michael F. Adams announced that he was instituting a limited hiring freeze on non-teaching positions at UGA, effective immediately.
I dont think this is anything drastic, but it is prudent, given the budget were looking at for 2003, he told the cabinet members.

Office of Institutional Diversity holds open house
The university community is invited to an open house for the Office of Institutional Diversity, located on the newly renovated ground floor of the Holmes-Hunter Academic Building.
The open house is March 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held in the foyer outside the suite of offices at 10 a.m., with a reception immediately following.
President Michael F. Adams and Provost Karen Holbrook will deliver remarks, along with Louis Castenell, acting associate provost for institutional diversity.
Setting priorities: Annual management conference focuses on budget, partnerships
Optimizing fiscal resources and enhancing partnerships with the public and private sectors were the topics of the day when some 100 university administrators and senior faculty gathered at the Georgia Center Feb. 22 for the fourth annual management conference convened by President Michael F. Adams.
The group heard presentations from senior administrators and also broke into smaller sessions to explore ways to strengthen collaborations in several areas, ranging from biotechnology to water policy to programs for nontraditional students.
McBee, emeritus vice president, will receive state humanities award

State Rep. Louise McBee of Athens has been chosen to receive a Governors Award in the Humanities, partly in recognition of her support for the humanities during her 25-year career as a top University of Georgia administrator.
McBee, vice president emeritus for academic affairs at UGA, will be the first member of the Georgia General Assembly and the first elected state official to receive the award, given annually by the Georgia Humanities Council to recognize outstanding support of the humanities in Georgia. She is the 11th person associated with UGA to receive the award since it was started in 1986.
