Office of Institutional Diversity holds open house

The university community is invited to an open house for the Office of Institutional Diversity, located on the newly renovated ground floor of the Holmes-Hunter Academic Building.
The open house is March 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held in the foyer outside the suite of offices at 10 a.m., with a reception immediately following.
President Michael F. Adams and Provost Karen Holbrook will deliver remarks, along with Louis Castenell, acting associate provost for institutional diversity.
Castenell says he plans to recognize the members of the design team who worked on creating a three-year strategic plan for the office.
The group of approximately 30 students, faculty, staff and administrators met weekly throughout most of the fall semester to define goals for the office and for the university, as well as objectives to achieve the goals.
The resulting plan focuses on recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate students from historically under-represented groups, but also addresses recruitment and retention of faculty and staff. It additionally calls for coordinated institutional efforts to promote a climate where inclusiveness and diversity are respected as core values and for support for research, teaching and public service related to diversity and equity issues.
Copies of the strategic plan are available from the Office of Institutional Diversity, along with the first issue of a newsletter on Diversity at UGA. A Web site is being developed to facilitate sharing information with audiences on and off campus.
