Limited hiring freeze goes into effect

At the most recent cabinet meeting, on Feb. 20, President Michael F. Adams announced that he was instituting a limited hiring freeze on non-teaching positions at UGA, effective immediately.
I dont think this is anything drastic, but it is prudent, given the budget were looking at for 2003, he told the cabinet members.
The governor has asked state agencies, including the university system, to reduce the current years budget by 2.5 percent and the coming years by an additional 2.5 percent in response to the falloff in tax receipts. In addition, the governor has asked for no layoffs of existing personnel and has asked the legislature for a salary raise pool of 3.5 percent for fiscal year 2003.
Adams said he believes those goals can be met while still adequately staffing teaching positions if non-teaching hires are put on hold.
Case-by-case exceptions will be possible, he said, in critical situations, such as public safety. Beginning immediately, the signature of one of the three senior vice presidents or the president will be required for the hiring of non-teaching personnel.
No ending date for the freeze has been adopted.
