National search gets under way for new grad dean

A UGA search committee has received applications from 31 candidates seeking to become the new dean of the Graduate School. Applications will be accepted until March 22.
The national search, which has drawn applicants from a variety of academic and administrative backgrounds, was begun earlier this year after former dean of the graduate school Gordhan H. Patel was named vice president for research.
UGA is 31st in the country in number of doctoral degrees conferred and 23rd in total research and development expenditures at public universities, with a total exceeding $270 million. Currently, the university enrolls about 6,000 full-time graduate and professional students. The graduate school offers 21 doctoral and educational specialist degree programs in 107 areas and 28 master’s degrees in 145 areas of concentration. In addition, UGA offers terminal degrees (such as the master’s of fine arts and the master’s of landscape architecture), and professional degree programs are offered in law, pharmacy and veterinary medicine.
Louis A. Castenell Jr., dean of the College of Education and chair of the search committee, says he hopes the group can recommend finalists by the end of spring. Members of the committee include Alison Alexander, telecommunications; Bruce Bongarten, Forest Resources; Timothy Dore, chemistry; Diane Edison, art; Katrina Landau, graduate student; Brenda Manning, elementary education; Jere Morehead, Honors program; Hugh Ruppersburg, Arts and Sciences; Jan Sandor, Graduate School admissions; Henry Schaefer, Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry; Steve Stice, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences; Garnett Stokes, psychology; Anne Summers, microbiology; Scott Weinberg, Environmental Design; and David Wright, child and family development.
