U. of Connecticut fined
The University of Connecticut was fined $129,500 for more than 50 violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act. In addition, the school will make major policy changes as part of a settlement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The violations included the improper care, inadequate veterinary attention, and inhumane deaths of lab animals. In addition to beginning a $20 million renovation program to modernize the animal-care facilities, the university has hired a new research-compliance officer to ensure that all research conducted meets federal regulations.
Disabled applicants get more time
The Law School Admission Council and the U.S. Department of Justice have announced an agreement that will give law school applicants with physical disabilities more time to complete the standardized entrance exam, the Law School Admission Test. Test takers will be required to provide documents confirming their disabilities for special accommodations to be made. The agreement affects testing accommodations only for people with physical impairments, such as vision problems.
