DAVIN WELTER
Station Manager
WUGA-FM 91.7 and 97.9
TIME IN CURRENT POSITION: Two years and five months.

JOB DESCRIPTION: I am responsible for overseeing all the station activities including news, programming, underwriting, marketing and fund raising. Its a catch-all, whatever-needs-to-be-dealt-with job.
A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK: On any given day, I take care of whatever fires crop up and need to be put out. I deal with listeners who call with comments or people who have heard something on the air that they want to share. The most typical thing is the interaction with the listeners and getting listener feedback. We are also always looking for new, exciting projects and partnerships that we can be involved with.
THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF MY JOB: Knowing the tremendous opportunities and responsibilities we have with the community and working with the limited resources that weve got. We have to find resources with no real financial return so it is tough to find sources. We also report through UGA but our license is held by Georgia Public Broadcasting. It is a challenge to mesh the two different entities.
THE MOST REWARDING PART OF MY JOB: Knowing weve connected and made a difference in a listeners life or in our community. I like to know that weve made people laugh, made them think about an issue, educated them on a particular topic or entertained them with a piece of music. Its even rewarding when we get negative calls. We strive to make people stand back and listen a little bit differently.
OTHER UGA EXPERIENCE: Before this job, I was an assistant to the director for development at the Georgia Center. I was also a development officer at the central development office.
OTHER WORK EXPERIENCE: I worked in the development office at Georgia Southern University, the Medical College of Georgia and Furman University. I worked for former U.S. Sen. Sam Nunn in Washington, D.C., and for the United States Supreme Court after I graduated from college.
IF I WAS NOT DOING THIS JOB, I WOULD MOST LIKE TO: Run a non-profit organization that would protect and preserve the Ogeechee River in south Georgia. It is a wild and pristine river that I grew up on, and Id want to keep it in a pristine condition.
OFF-THE-JOB INTERESTS: I love to be on the river. I like canoeing, kayaking, and I like to fish with my father. I also play cards all the time. My family is competitive about playing cards--it is something I grew up with.
FAVORITE MUSIC: I really like everything thats out there.
A BOOK AND MOVIE I WOULD RECOMMEND TO OTHERS: Ted Turner: It Aint as Easy as It Looks: A Biography by Porter Bibb.
I also like the movie Schindlers List because the movie and the book talk about very human people who have accomplished some amazing things.
THE PEOPLE I MOST ADMIRE: I love Thomas Jefferson because he was so well-rounded. In addition to being involved in politics, he was an architect, a farmer and an educator.
I also admire my dad, Dave, because he overcame a lot of odds, and because he is a very wonderful person.
I also admire Earl Leonard, former senior vice president at Coca-Cola. He is a really down-to-earth person who is always reaching out to help people.
ISSUES THAT CONCERNS ME MOST ABOUT TODAYS WORLD: The lack of enthusiasm and participation in our democracy--the number of people who are registered and who actually vote is appalling. I dont believe that our citizens are as engaged as they should be in our government.
I am also concerned about growth, development and sprawl. We need to have a healthy balance between growth and protecting the natural resources weve got.
