Worth repeating
Bernard Shaw, broadcast journalist and former CNN anchor, was honored with the Distinguished Achievement Award in Broadcasting from the Di Gamma Kappa Society at UGAs Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. Shaw accepted the award at a banquet where he addressed Grady College students. An excerpt:
You who are studying journalism and communication at this fine school, please understand this: journalism is not glamorous, and if you are a serious practicing journalist, you should also know that this is a dangerous business. . . . If you are a journalist--especially an American journalist--in some parts of the world, you are a target
period. Look at the case of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl.
A group called the National Movement for the Restoration of Pakistani Sovereignty kidnapped Pearl, distributed a picture of him with a gun held to his head. This group said it acted because, it charged, Pearl was a CIA officer pretending to be a Wall Street Journal reporter. The Journal and the U.S. government vigorously deny that. . . .
Journalism is dangerous, sometimes deadly, forever rewarding, and always crucial to democracy, to the peoples right to know and vital to their ability to decide on all matters affecting their lives. . . .
Each of you is special, but some of you are more special to me. You who want to be journalists. You who are journalists. . . . You are needed. Please, do not walk, run to this profession, race to journalism, thats just how badly we need you. . . . Journalism needs you! Now!
