NCAA re-certifies athletics program
UGA was among 12 Division I member institutions re-certified by the National Collegiate Athletic Association in the second round of athletics certifications completed recently.
A visiting committee was on campus during summer 2001 and provided a report last September, to which the university provided its response in October. The materials were reviewed by the NCAA certification committee at its January 2002 meeting and the certification decision made. Formal announcement came from the NCAA on Feb. 21.
All 321 Division I member institutions must undergo certification review every 10 years under NCAA legislation adopted in 1993. A first round of certifications was completed in the first five years following the legislation’s adoption. This is the first round of re-certifications on the 10-year cycle.
According to the NCAA, the purpose of athletics certification is to ensure integrity in the institution’s athletics program and to assist institutions in improving their athletics departments. The certification process, which involves a self-study directed by the institution’s chief executive, includes a review of governance and commitment to rules of compliance, academic integrity, fiscal integrity and commitment to equity.
“I am grateful to everyone on the visiting certification committee and all associated NCAA and UGA staff for their hard work and professional contributions during this important process,” says UGA President Michael F. Adams.

Georgia Museum of Art wins awards
The Georgia Museum of Art received two awards for excellence at the 2002 Georgia Association of Museums and Galleries conference.
Scottish Treasures: Masterpieces from the National Gallery of Scotland won an award for Museum Exhibition of the Year for presenting a prominent collection of significant European paintings. The exhibition also provided the public with educational programs and activities. Masterpieces from the National Gallery of Scotland included 50 works, ranging in date from the 15th to the 19th centuries, and featured both American and European artists, ranging in style from devotional subjects
to portraiture. The exhibition, shown in six galleries at the Georgia Museum of Art, provided an overview of the history of European paintings from the high Renaissance in Italy to 19th-century British and French Romanticism.
Linda C. Chesnut, of Atlanta, won the award for Volunteer of the Year at the GAMG conference. Chesnut chairs the Decorative Arts Committee, which was instrumental in the success of the first symposium of the new Henry D. Green Center for the Study of Decorative Arts.

RHA wins SALT leadership training award
UGA’s Residence Hall Association has been awarded the Student Award for Leadership Training by the National Association of College and University Residence Halls and the American College Personnel Association. The SALT award rewards student leadership training programs in residence halls. The award will be presented at the ACPA national board of directors semi-annual meeting.
UGA’s winning program entry, “Exec-n-Rec,” is a weekend event to assist in the training of University Housing hall and community council executive officers and Residence Hall Association members.
“The Residence Hall Association is very deserving of this national recognition; the organization does an excellent job in recruiting and preparing leaders among student residents,” says Jim Day, director of University Housing. “I’m equally proud of the excellent support and advice provided to RHA by Diana Fruth and Kevin McKee, who serve as staff advisers to the group.”
