NIH director nominated
President Bush has nominated Elias A. Zerhouni to become director of the National Institutes of Health. Zerhouni is currently the executive vice dean of the John Hopkins University School of Medicine. Zerhouni, 50, is a researcher in radiology who has played a large role in creating several institutes at Hopkins focused on interdisciplinary research, including stem-cell research. Researchers generally welcomed the nomination. The NIH directors job has been vacant since December 1999, when Harold E. Varmus left.
First Amendment rights upheld
The U.S. Supreme Court has let stand a 2001 ruling that allowed an adjunct faculty member to sue administrators at a community college over free-speech rights. Jefferson Community College, in Kentucky, was sued by Kenneth Hardy. Hardys contract was not renewed when he encouraged class members to use slurs against minority groups during a discussion about offensive communication. Hardy sued the college and two administrators, claiming that his dismissal violated his First Amendment right to free speech. A federal district court dismissed Hardys claims but rejected as well the administrators arguments that Hardy had no right to sue.
