GAIL BRIDGES
Building Supervisor
Georgia Museum of Art
TIME IN CURRENT POSITION: Twelve years.
JOB DESCRIPTION: I wear several hats at the museum: I make sure the temperature and humidity are correct in the galleries, serve as the liaison between GMOA and the physical plant, troubleshoot computer problems, maintain office supplies, work as museum courier, assist with special events and oversee office machine maintenance and care. I am on call 24/7 for building supervision and security.
A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK: There isnt really a typical day. Just making sure the temperature and humidity levels are correct. Because my responsibilities are so varied, my work day is always different; its a day-to-day experience.
THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF MY JOB: Working with some of the men who dont think a woman can do a mans job. You have to prove yourself in this job. I have earned the respect of my peers and colleagues.
THE MOST REWARDING PART OF MY JOB: I enjoy finding out that I can accomplish something I ordinarily didnt think I could do. For example, Ive never had computer training, but with each new crisis I learn something new. It is rewarding not only to help my co-workers, but also to improve my education while on the job.
OTHER UGA EXPERIENCES: I worked at the physical plant for four years prior to coming to the museum. I ran the work order desk and dispatched emergency calls.
OTHER WORK EXPERIENCE: I was a pharmacy technician for six years.
IF I WAS NOT DOING THIS JOB, I WOULD MOST LIKE TO: Be a cruise director on a luxury liner.
OFF-THE-JOB INTERESTS: I like gardening, water sports and camping. Most of all, I like spending time with my family and four-month-old granddaughter, Brookelyn.
FAVORITE MUSIC: I like everything from country to rock-and-roll.
A BOOK I WOULD RECOMMEND TO OTHERS: T.D. Jakess Woman Thou Art Loosed. It is very inspirational to me and helped me through some trying times in my life.
THE PERSON I MOST ADMIRE: My mother, Joyce Eunice, because she raised five children as a single parent.
THE ISSUE THAT CONCERNS ME MOST ABOUT TODAYS WORLD: Mainly just the state of the world today.
I am concerned about the economy and the war. If people cant find jobs, how will they take care of their families?
