Undergraduate faculty mentors recognized at CURO Symposium
Three faculty members were honored for mentoring undergraduate researchers during the annual Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities Symposium. William D. Paul Jr. and Katherine Kipp received the Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award, which recognizes the outstanding efforts of faculty who encourage students to produce scholarly and creative works while attending UGA. Susan Sanchez was also recognized for guiding undergraduate researchers.
David Puett, head of the department of biochemistry and molecular biology, accepted the award for his departments commitment to undergraduate research. Physics at the Boundary, a new undergraduate summer research program in the department of physics and astronomy, was also recognized for its inter-institutional and interdisciplinary mentoring efforts in fungal genomics research. This Research Experience for Undergraduates program, funded by a National Science Foundation grant, included faculty from Clark Atlanta University and Georgia State University.
Paul, a Sandy Beaver Teaching Professor in the Lamar Dodd School of Art, was nominated by one of his students, Lorina Naci, a senior visual arts major who participated in CUROs research fellowship program last summer. Paul challenges his students core values so that they look beyond the classroom to find their own artistic identity, according to Naci.
Kipp, an associate professor in the department of psychology, uses the immersion approach when guiding her undergraduate researchers. Students work on their own original ideas or choose a project based on their individual interests. Through lab meetings on ongoing projects and group discussions on ethics and academics, Kipps students develop the necessary skills at every step of the research process.
One student recommending Kipp for the award wrote, Her mentoring style is unrestrained and informal. She holds students accountable and responsible for their work without overwhelming them. I have had such a positive experience working with Katherine as an undergraduate student that I have since decided to pursue a doctorate degree under her leadership.
Sanchez exposes her students to veterinarians real-world problems at the Athens Regional Diagnostic Laboratory in the College of Veterinary Medicine, where she directs the microbiology section. While Sanchezs responsibilities do not require teaching, she uses the laboratory setting to introduce and nurture the undergraduates who participate in applied medical research projects.
