Terry College of Business Faculty Awards
Professors George Selgin, David Sommer and Jim Trieschmann will be honored as winners of the Terry Colleges annual faculty awards at a recognition dinner April 30 at the State Botanical Garden.
George Selgin, of the department of economics, will receive the Distinguished Research Award. A faculty member since 1989, Selgin has developed a reputation both nationally and internationally for his work in monetary theory, history and policy. He has published in dozens of professional journals, both those specializing in his areas of expertise and in general economics journals. A study completed last year by the European Centre for Advanced Research in Economics ranked Selgin among the top 250 most published economists in the world. Selgin is an adjunct scholar of the Cato Institute, a prominent Washington think tank, as well as an editorial board member of and regular contributor to The Cato Journal. Selgin was also recently appointed to the Southern Economic Association Board of Trustees.
David Sommer, of the department of insurance, legal studies and real estate, will receive the Outstanding Teaching Award. Since joining the Terry College in 1995, Sommer has developed a reputation among both students and faculty as an instructor whose classes are rigorous, challenging and interesting. He is also known for caring deeply about the success of his students while they are in his class and beyond. He has received consistently excellent student evaluations, and was formally recognized for his excellent teaching at the 2000 Honors Day Convocation. He has twice received the Outstanding Teacher Award from Alpha Kappa Psi, UGAs professional business fraternity.
Jim Trieschmann, of the department of insurance, legal studies and real estate, will receive the Outstanding Service Award. Trieschmanns 28 years at the Terry College have been marked by numerous and extensive contributions in support of Terry, UGA, risk and insurance academics, and the broader community. He has served as president of both the American Risk and Insurance Association and the Southern Risk and Insurance Association.
His record of service to the business community includes work on the program committee of the International Insurance Society. In Georgia, he served as both member and chairman of the agent licensing committees for life and property liability.
The Terry College of Business Faculty Awards are made each spring after faculty committees (one student serves on the Outstanding Teaching committee) appointed by the dean review nominations submitted by each of the departments.
