Ralph F. Johnson, who was in charge of major facilities operations as a Navy engineer for 24 years and now holds a top physical plant position at Pennsylvania State University, has been named head of physical plant at UGA.
Johnsons appointment as associate vice president for physical plant is effective May 20 pending approval by the board of regents. He fills the position left vacant by the recent retirement of James TenBrook.
Johnson, who holds a masters degree in engineering from Georgia Tech, has been director of operations for the Penn State physical plant since 1997. Previously, he held a number of leadership positions in the Navy Civil Engineer Corps, among them managing public works and facilities at several large naval bases, including Guantanamo Bay in Cuba and the Naval Weapons Station in Charleston, S.C.
At UGA, he will oversee the operation and maintenance of more than eight million square feet of facilities on the universitys 650-acre campus, and another 3.5 million square feet of on-campus auxiliary services.
With a budget of more than $60 million and some 900 employees, physical plant is responsible for building maintenance, custodial services, renovation and construction, steam and electrical distribution, grounds and landscape maintenance, the vehicle shop and rental pool, and a stores warehouse with a $1 million inventory.
After considering qualifications, and receiving the views of a variety of interested people, it was clear that Mr. Johnson was the most outstanding candidate, says Hank Huckaby, senior vice president for finance and administration. We are extremely pleased to attract someone with his ability and impressive experience. |
