UGA hosts roundtable discussion as part of Africa Initiative By Nadine Randall dini@uga.edu
Six vice chancellors from East African universities and the executive secretary of the Inter-University Council of East Africa will visit UGA to participate in a roundtable from April 27 to May 4. This meeting is the newest phase of the university-wide Africa Initiative, established in July 2001 to stimulate public service and outreach-oriented projects with colleges and universities throughout Africa. This Africa Initiative roundtable is a crucial first step in our efforts to build strong partnerships with African institutions of higher education, says Lioba Moshi, director of the African Studies Institute. We hope to hold subsequent roundtables, one for West African institutions and another for South African institutions in the near future. The roundtable is intended both to strengthen established relationships and to develop new opportunities for collaboration with African institutions. Participants will visit academic and public service units across campus throughout the week of the roundtable. Each participant will conduct seminars on their institutional strengths, needs and priorities with selected colleges and public service units on campus. They will also work with UGA faculty to formulate a plan for further collaboration and specific action.
