FSU loses accreditation appeal
Florida State University College of Medicines application for provisional accreditation has been turned down for a second time. After having their original application rejected in February, FSU administrators appealed the decision. Earlier this month, they learned their appeal also had been turned down by the committee that accredits the 125 medical schools in the United States. The licensing board concluded that the school relied too heavily on part-time instructors and gave individual faculty members too much control over course content. The medical school, which enrolled its first class students this past May, plans to reapply for accreditation this summer.
Arkansas receives $300 million pledge
The Walton family of Arkansas, whose Wal-Mart Stores recently became Americas largest corporation, has pledged $300 million to the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville--the largest gift ever to a public university in the United States.
The money, from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation, will establish an undergraduate honors college and also go toward the universitys graduate school. According to university officials, the foundation made the pledge with the aim of creating a top-50 public research university and sparking economic development in one of the countrys poorest states.
