K.C. the calf
The cells that developed into K.C. came from the kidney area of a cow slaughtered at a local commercial processing facility. A female calf, K.C. is an Angus-Hereford cross sometimes called a “Black Baldy.” (Photo by Rick O’Quinn)

It’s a girl!

Scientists at UGA and ProLinia, an agricultural biotechnology company, have produced the first calf ever cloned from cells of a slaughtered cow. The healthy calf was delivered by Caesarian section April 22 at the College of Veterinary Medicine. The breakthrough has the potential to revolutionize beef cattle production by allowing producers to select cells from the highest-quality meat after it has been graded to clone animals to stock their herd.
Kidney cells were taken approximately 48 hours after the cow had been slaughtered in a local commercial processing facility, processed for transport and cloned in a UGA-ProLinia laboratory. Cattle producers will be able to select for the genetic traits that result in the highest-quality meat; calves cloned as part of that process will then be given optimal care, resulting in higher quality, more consistent beef products.

W. Fred Mills, professor of trumpet and brass chamber music in UGA’s School of Music, has been named first recipient of the William F. and Pamela P. Prokasy Professorship in the Arts.
This endowed professorship in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences is selected from art, music, drama or dance and honors a faculty member with an outstanding national reputation. Prokasy and his wife, Pam, contributed to the professorship, but numerous friends and supporters did as well. It’s a way of extending his legacy far into the future.

Faculty members look ‘Towards 2010’ at annual symposium

UGA faculty members and state leaders from government, industry and higher education gathered to explore trends and opportunities in interdisciplinary engineering at the April 18 symposium “Towards 2010: The Faculty of Engineering at UGA.” The event was the second in the annual “Towards 2010” series. Last year’s symposium generated a number of engineering initiatives, including the Faculty of Engineering, UGA’s interdisciplinary engineering unit composed of 77 members from some 24 departments in eight schools and colleges across campus.

Vehicle registration begins May 1 for university’s new parking system

Faculty, staff and students will have two months to indicate their preferences for parking areas when online registration begins May 1 for the new parking system, which is designed to replace the current “hunting license” approach with guaranteed parking in a selected area.
“We’re trying to emphasize that there’s no rush to register,” says Joyce Hardman, director of parking and transportation. “It’s not first-come, first-served--it won’t improve your chances to get your first choice to do it earlier.”

A touch of Paris

From the Centre Nationale d’Art et Culture Georges Pompidou in Paris comes an exhibition featuring works by the French artist Albert Marquet (1875-1947). The exhibition will be on view through July 7.
