Vehicle registration begins May 1 for university’s new parking system

Faculty, staff and students will have two months to indicate their preferences for parking areas when online registration begins
May 1 for the new parking system, which is designed to replace the current “hunting license” approach with guaranteed parking in a selected area.
“We’re trying to emphasize that there’s no rush to register,” says Joyce Hardman, director of parking and transportation. “It’s not first-come, first-served--it won’t improve your chances to get your first choice to do it earlier.”
This year those who wish to purchase a parking permit will register on the Parking Services Web site (www.parking.uga.edu). A UGA MyID account is required to log on to the site between May 1 and June 30. (The Arches e-mail system uses the MyID name and password; those who do not already have an account can request one at www.arches.uga.edu/myid/).
On the parking Web site, registrants will choose their preferred area for parking; second and third (and more) choices can be indicated. The new parking map--which is being sent to everyone who purchased parking this year and is also available on the Web site--uses a color-coded scheme to indicate three price levels ($10, $20 and $30 per month) and four priority groups in the 60 areas of the Athens campus.
The priority classifications were developed by Parking Services with the assistance of the parking task force created last fall. Hardman says the task force worked to develop a system that gives the lowest-paid employees first priority for the least expensive parking areas and residence hall residents first priority in lots near residence halls.
“We think that this is going to address everybody’s needs,” says Hardman. “And after registration closes on June 30 we’ll be able to see how well it works by looking at how many people got their first or second choices for parking.”
The task force is now working on details and incentive packages for those--bikers, bus riders, walkers, car poolers--who choose to use alternative transportation as well as procedures for handicapped parking and multiple-area permits. Those needing handicapped parking spots will indicate that when they register for parking, providing their permit number. Similarly, those who wish a reserved parking spot ($50 per month) will apply for it when registering. These requests will be reviewed by Parking Services.
Information sessions are scheduled for the first week in May (see box) to give everyone a chance to learn about the new plan. Those who do not have access to a computer can attend registration assistance sessions in early June in the computer labs at the Training and Development Center. Departments with a large number of employees who need assistance can call Parking Services to arrange special assistance sessions.
Once registration closes at midnight June 30, Parking Services will assign registrants to parking areas according to their listed preference matched with priority groups. Assignments will be e-mailed to those who registered, and they will arrange payment (by payroll deduction, check or credit card) beginning July 5. Permits (hangtags or stickers, depending on area) will be mailed beginning July 19 for use beginning Aug. 16, although the new rate structure will not go into effect until this year’s raises begin in October.
