UGA Guide

Seeing with photographs

The current exhibition at the gallery in the Tate Student Center is I Found It When I Stopped Looking, photographs by local photographer Frank Hamrick, included in his book of the same name published last year by Nexus Press.
Hamrick received a bachelor of fine arts degree in photography from UGA in 2000. As his technical skills improved, he says, he felt increasingly trapped by the disappearance of subject matter. “My photography professor encouraged me to photograph the world as I saw it,” he says now, and as a result “I stopped looking. I knew what I was looking for and realized it would eventually come to me if I were patient. I then saw all the things I had missed when I was looking for something else.”
