UGA offers employees fare-free bus transportation in county

University of Georgia employees can now ride Athens Transit buses without paying fares under an arrangement aimed at easing UGAs parking crunch and reducing traffic on Athens streets.
The plan allows employees to ride Athens buses, known as The Bus, without charge by showing their university identification card. The arrangement includes bus routes on campus and anywhere the buses run in Clarke County, Monday through Friday.
The university will reimburse Athens Transit based on ridership.
The plan, developed by UGA and Athens-Clarke County officials, was approved by the Athens-Clarke County Commission July 2 and is effective immediately.
Joyce Hardman, director of parking and transportation at UGA, says the plan provides an attractive transportation alternative to university employees.
We hope many employees will now ride the bus instead of driving to campus, she says. Parking Services offers an alternative transportation package for people who choose not to bring cars to campus on a daily basis. Those incentives are explained on the Parking Services Web site.
Hardman says Athens Transit hopes to work out park-and-ride arrangements.
UGA has a long-standing arrangement with Athens Transit that allows students to ride Athens buses. The service is funded by UGAs campus transit system.
