Business manager named Employee of the Year
Rita Richardson, head of the College of Pharmacy business office, received the colleges 2001 Employee of the Year award last month.
Richardsons office is a busy one, providing support for faculty, students and staff. She and the three other staff members also field numerous phone calls.
She is responsible for all fiscal matters for the college, including processing and disbursing grant money, handling travel expenditures, maintaining personnel records, overseeing equipment purchases and dozens of other budgetary matters. Its not uncommon for Richardson to work through her lunch hour or to take work home in the evenings. During budget preparation time for the upcoming fiscal year, she has been known to close her door to outsiders so she can devote her full attention to the task at hand.
In presenting her award, Dean Svein Oie quoted from the recommendations of others: Her work ethic reflects the spirit of this award; Most remarkable is her ability to remain flexible while maintaining irreproachable integrity; Her acceptance of responsibility and the judicious use of authority are traits that evoke trust, admiration and respect from her peers and co-workers.
Richardson has worked at the college for seven years and previously worked in the universitys Office of Vice President for Research for 23 years. Although she is eligible to retire, she enjoys her work in the academic environment and plans to be around for a while longer, she says.
Richardsons award consisted of a cash award of $1,000 and an engraved plaque.
