New permits now required for parking
The new fiscal year 2003 parking permits were required for parking on campus beginning Aug. 16. Faculty, staff and students should have begun parking in their newly assigned parking zones on this date. The old fiscal year 2002 zones and permits remained in effect through Aug. 15.
All permits were mailed by Aug. 12. Those who did not receive permits by Aug. 16 are asked to park in their newly assigned zones even without the permit. Stricter enforcement will begin on Aug. 19. Persons who have been assigned a permit but still have not received it in the mail by Aug. 19 should contact parking services.
As in the past, the transferable stickers for fiscal year 2003 should be displayed on the lower passenger side front windshield to be clearly visible to parking officers. Hang tags should be hung from the rearview mirror with any validation sticker facing forward so as to be clearly visible to parking officers.
Faculty, staff and students who have not yet secured a fiscal year 2003 parking permit may park without charge temporarily at the Womens Athletic Complex on South Milledge Avenue beginning Aug. 19. A free shuttle bus will run Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. between that lot and the Ramsey Student Center where you may transfer to other campus bus routes. This temporary arrangement will continue for several weeks until all have had a chance to be worked into the permit system.
Athens Transit System buses (The Bus) are now fare-free for faculty, staff and students by showing a valid UGACard. Several free park-and-ride lots connected to Athens Transit routes are available throughout Clarke County and are detailed on the Athens Transit Web site (www.athenstransit.com).
Anyone wishing to apply to change permit zones may do so online at any time. The parking permit system will be rolled forward each week and attempts made to accommodate pending requests.
UGA departmental courier and state vehicle permits for fiscal year 2002 will remain valid through Aug. 31. Campus departments can apply for the fiscal year 2003 departmental and state vehicle permits by completing the departmental permit application form available on the parking services Web site (www.parking.uga.edu). Fax or mail the completed form to parking services.
Watts named GUC interim director
A senior policy adviser for the University System of Georgia was named interim director of the Gwinnett University Center earlier this month. Robert E. Watts took over the interim post Aug. 1 while system officials conduct a national search for a permanent director. Watts succeeds James Muyskens, who in May accepted the presidency of Queens College in New York.
Watts, who joined the university system office this summer, was previously interim president of Middle Georgia College and Floyd College. He also served as executive vice president for financial and administrative affairs at Georgia Perimeter College from 1991 to 2000.
College of Pharmacy participates in effort to meet health care needs
The university has been selected to participate in a $4.55 million statewide effort to address critical health care needs. Sponsored by the University System of Georgias Intellectual Capital Partnership Program, the Health Professionals Initiative will educate more than 500 medical technologists, nurses and pharmacists at 13 institutions in the state of Georgia during the next two years.
UGA will collaborate with Albany State University to educate pharmacists, addressing a shortage statewide that has reached a critical level in the southwest region of Georgia. UGA will receive $195,000 for the 2003 fiscal year.
Theres a tremendous shortage of pharmacists, says George Francisco, associate dean at the College of Pharmacy. The collaboration with Albany State University gives us the capacity to expand class size and train students in an area where there is a great need for their services.
UGAs College of Pharmacy will increase the size of the class that entered this month by 25 percent (from 100 to 125 students). These additional students will be educated through a satellite pharmacy program centered in Albany during the last three to five semesters of their curriculum. Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany will offer clinical rotations and provide classroom space for students. Albany State University will provide facilities for the project and assist UGA in recruiting minority students into the UGA pharmacy program. |
