The Thomas M. Jim Parham Professorship in Family and Children Studies: Issues in Social Policy was established last fall as the first endowed chair at the School of Social Work. June Hopps, former dean of the Graduate School of Social Work at Boston College, has been selected as the Parham Professor beginning this semester.
The Parham Professorship honors the late Jim Parhams contribution to social welfare policy and work with needy families throughout Georgia and the nation. The school sought an internationally recognized scholar with outstanding teaching and research records in social policy. Hoppss distinction as a professor, dean, publications editor and recipient of numerous national awards and honors earned her the appointment.
Hopps will serve as the schools leading representative in the area of public policy, particularly regarding families and children. Teaching courses and guiding research projects in this area, she will also be the schools liaison and advocate with state and federal government offices and legislators regarding emerging public policy issues in the field.
A Florida native, Hopps is an alumna of Spelman College, Atlanta University and Brandeis University. She has served as chairwoman of the board of Spelman College for several years and has been a visiting professor at UGA the past two years. Hoppss renewable term as Parham Professor is for a period of five to six years.
