Twenty new Foundation Fellows, seven Ramsey Scholars enter UGA

For 20 incoming first-year students, the decision to attend UGA is a rewarding one--both academically and financially.
The students--from Georgia and six other states--are recipients of the universitys prestigious Foundation Fellowship, created to provide an enhanced educational experience for academically outstanding undergraduate students. The class of 2006 also includes seven Ramsey Honors Scholars.
In addition to covering all costs for four years of study, the Foundation Fellowship includes all-expense-paid international travel-study experiences. Additionally, each student is paired with a senior faculty mentor and an upperclass Foundation Fellow for support and guidance. In the course of the academic year, they will take part in dinner seminars in professors homes, breakfast meetings with visiting campus lecturers and a variety of other academic enrichment opportunities.
The Ramsey Honors Scholarship for incoming first-year students was established in 2000 to honor the universitys most generous individual benefactor, the late Bernard B. Ramsey. It provides additional merit-based aid for high-achieving undergraduate students in the Honors Program, which enables the recipients to work closely with faculty in their majors and conduct original independent research.
Because the Foundation Fellowship is a coveted honor, the selection process is highly competitive. The average SAT of the incoming Fellows class is 1501. Eight of the 20 had a perfect 800 score on either the verbal or the math portion of the SAT. One student achieved perfect scores on both the SAT and the ACT. The average high school grade point average is 4.11 (on a 4.0 scale), which indicates extra points for advanced placement classes. The list of their high school activities and honors is just as impressive.
Selection for Ramsey Scholarships also is highly competitive. The incoming Ramsey Scholars have an average SAT score of 1523. One student scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT, and three students scored 35 on the ACT (out of a possible 36). Their average high school grade point average is 4.01.
Each Ramsey Scholar from Georgia is awarded $4,000 in addition to the monies provided by the state lottery-supported HOPE scholarship. Out-of-state students receive a $6,000 scholarship and a waiver for out-of-state tuition. The award is renewable for four years as long as students remain in good standing with the Honors Program.
For each of the past five years, we have admitted a more qualified first-year class than ever before, says President Michael F. Adams. The Foundation Fellows have an important role in this progress--they are the students who really could go to school anywhere in this country and choose UGA.
I am delighted to welcome such an outstanding group of young scholars to the University of Georgia, says Jere Morehead, associate provost and director of the Honors and Foundation Fellows programs. I am confident that the diversity and rich experiences they represent will add much to the university, the Honors Program and the Foundation Fellows Program in the future.
The Foundation Fellows Program was established in 1972 by the trustees of the University of Georgia Foundation and is supported by an endowment exceeding $50 million. The 20 entering students will bring the number of current fellows to 92.
