the Web. The guide, produced each year by the public safety division, the legal affairs office, the student affairs division and the universitys public affairs office, includes policies and statistics as required by law.
UGA has published complete on-campus crime statistics since 1969. The booklet and Web site also include counts for crimes reported by the Athens-Clarke County Police at off-campus locations occupied or used primarily by students, and provide information about the number of reports of alcohol, drug and weapons violations referred to the University Judiciary during 1999, 2000 and 2001.
A report released by the U.S. Department of Education in 1997 shows crime on the nations campuses occurs at a rate far below the national average. For example, 65 of every 100,000 college students are victims of murder, rape, robbery or aggravated assault each year. Burglary or vehicle theft occurs to 257 of every 100,000 students. For the nation as a whole, these rates are much higher: 716 violent crimes and 4,656 property crimes per 100,000 people.
