Office of International Education. The appointment was effective Aug. 1.
Sarmiento succeeded Richard Reiff, who retired from UGA in June after 32 years of service. The Office of International Education is part of the universitys overall international affairs effort, under the direction of Mark Lusk, associate provost for international affairs.
As director of international education, Sarmiento will oversee the universitys study-abroad programs and immigration services and will work on collaborative contracts and grants. UGA administers more than 50 study-abroad programs in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa and engages in cooperative research and teaching with nearly 100 international partners.
UGA is currently ranked 15th nationally among major research universities in the number of students studying abroad. More than 17 percent of the class of 2002 studied abroad.
The University of Georgia has an ambitious agenda for international education, says Lusk. We are working to make it to the top five among research universities in study abroad. Dr. Sarmientos extensive expertise in international education and research will be pivotal in moving the university to the next stage of internationalization.
Sarmiento is a mountain ecologist whose scholarly work emphasizes the tropical Andes. He is chair of the Mountain Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers and has been recognized for his work in fostering sustainable mountain development around the world.
Sarmiento was executive director of the Ecuadorean Museum of Natural Sciences before coming to the United States to earn a masters degree in ecology from Ohio State University in 1991. He earned a doctorate in ecology from UGA in 1996 and has held a variety of positions with UGAs Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies since that time.
