Worth repeating

U.S. Sen. Zell Miller
returned to campus last month to speak at the symposium on the “Future of American Agriculture” sponsored by the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. An excerpt:
“Last year, we gathered [at the third annual agricultural symposium] to discuss what the future held for agriculture in the Southeast. . . . And make no mistake about it, the agriculture symposium was a key element in crafting the new farm bill in a manner beneficial to Southeastern agriculture. . . .
“In fact, this symposium over the years
has given producers, educators and agribusiness leaders the opportunity to express ideas and concerns. . . .
“Many philosophies and quite a few opinions were discussed at last year’s symposium, but one issue was louder than all the others. Loud and clear, I heard from you that we must have
a new farm bill, and we must have a new farm bill soon. I’m delighted that I can stand before you today and say we have a new farm bill. A new farm bill, I believe, is good for all farmers across this nation. . . .
“Once again, I want to thank the University of Georgia for hosting this event and all of you for continuing to make it a great success. I hope we can use what we learn today about the new farm bill to increase the productivity and success of Southeastern agriculture.”
