Worth repeating
John Crowley, dean of UGAs new College of Environment and Design, delivered a state of the college address Aug. 28 in the Chapel. An excerpt:
A truly great and wonderful man died less than two weeks ago. . . . I cannot begin to do justice to the many decades of incredible insight, vision, leadership and advancement of a new and comprehensive view of natural systems. . . . Dr. Eugene Odum lived a very full and complete life, filled with a constant and successful pursuit of an ecological vision, which has revolutionized the way we look at Earth.
The . . . development of our college was in large part his dreams and visions. Many of us sought and were unselfishly given his counsel as recently as two or three weeks ago. We will miss him. But we can certainly honor and respect his legacy by being unquestionably successful in this colleges endeavors.
In this year, we might best respect his legacy by proposing to a wide contributor audience . . . the naming of the Institute of Ecology after him by the years end. With this fund I would also propose that we underwrite an Odum Scholar and recruit a young faculty member whose scholarship and research are deemed to be innovative. . . . The second funded undertaking would be to comprehensively renovate and improve as well as sustainably support an off-site ecological facility. . . . Finally Dr. Odum had a powerful impact on a number of generations of students. Support of students was one of his greatest hallmarks. Today . . . Im announcing the creation and funding of four Odum Fellows in the Institute of Ecology. . . . I can easily envision a college-wide expansion of Odum Fellows as the funding base grows.
