Understanding first-year students
Beloit College has released its annual guide to understanding freshmen, designed to help faculty and administrators communicate with their new students.
Most entering first-year students were born in 1984 and have always had computers, cell phones and other advanced technologies in their lives. Here are a few other reminders about how the world looks from a freshmans viewpoint:
Cars have always had air bags, CD players, and eye-level rear brake lights.
Richard Burton, Ricky Nelson and Truman Capote have always been dead.
The evil empire has moved from Moscow to a galaxy far, far away.
Big Brother is a television show.
A Southerner has always been president.
Prom dresses have always come in basic black. A hair band is a fashion accessory--not a rock group.
Afghanistan has always been a front-page story.
Connie Chung and Geraldo Rivera have never been serious journalists.
Cherry Coke has always come in cans.
