SREL to provide HERP conservation tools
The Savannah River Ecology Laboratory has received a $240,000 grant from the USDA Forest Service to fund the development of regional protocols for inventorying and monitoring of reptiles and amphibians (herpetofauna). The grant was facilitated by an interagency cooperation among SREL, the Forest Service and the U.S. Department of Energy. SREL is located on a DOE facility in Aiken, S.C.
The cooperative agreement between the USFS and DOE is a major step in strengthening the national cohesiveness of PARC [Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation], says Whit Gibbons, who will administer the grant for SREL. During the upcoming year, SREL will initiate development of regional inventory and monitoring handbooks and conservation status assessments for reptiles and amphibians in each of the five PARC regions. Herpetologists from across the country will be involved in both projects.
According to Gibbons, a major significance of this new funding is that it demonstrates the U.S. Forest Services commitment at the national level toward the conservation of reptiles and amphibians, and its willingness to work in partnership with other agencies, universities and the private sector.
The grant represents funding for the first year of a proposed three-year national initiative which will improve the understanding of the status of all U.S. amphibians and reptiles while improving consistency in how these species are surveyed on public and private lands.
EOO conducts survey of military veterans
In response to U.S. Department of Labor reporting requirements, the UGA Equal Opportunity Office is conducting a survey of UGA employees who are veterans of U.S. military service. The survey will determine the extent to which veterans are a part of the workforce of government contractors such as the university.
Copies of the survey form, available on the Web at www.uga.edu/eoo, may be completed and printed from the Internet. Copies of the survey form and informational memo also have been distributed to the offices of deans and vice presidents for redistribution as needed. It is requested that employees who are U.S. military veterans and who have not previously completed such a survey at UGA obtain and complete the survey form. Completed forms may be faxed to 542-2822 or returned via campus mail or regular mail to reach the Equal Opportunity Office, 3 Peabody Hall, Athens, GA 30602-1622, no later than Sept. 20.
Participating in this survey is totally voluntary. Failure to participate does not preclude completing the survey at a later date. Neither participation nor non-participation in the survey will negatively affect a persons employee status. Neither participation nor non-participation will have any effect upon veterans benefits currently being received nor entitlement to receive future benefits.
Questions about this survey should be directed to Len Davis, UGA veterans reporting officer, at 542-7912.
Terry College enrolls large M.B.A. class
The full-time Terry M.B.A. program has enrolled one of its largest classes ever while maintaining the same high academic standards as last years class. Seventy-two new two-year M.B.A. students entered the program this fall. Thats on top of the 40 11-month M.B.A. students who began taking classes in summer semester. The combined class of 112 new students posted the following stats: five years of work experience on average; 658 average score on the Graduate Management Admission Test; and a 3.29 grade point average. Georgia residents comprise 35 percent of the class, and 31 percent are international students. Admissions Director Anne Cooper says the program attracted foreign students from a greater mix of nations this year. This years class also represents 77 undergraduate institutions.
