Three employees in animal resources at the College of Arts and Sciences received awards from the southeastern branch of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
Jennifer Smith, animal facility supervisor, won the 2001 Technician of the Year Award, which included a plaque and an honorarium of $500. The award is presented annually to an outstanding technician in the field of laboratory animal science.
Christopher Carter, animal care supervisor, received the 2001 Sally N. Papp Member Participation Award, which included a plaque and an honorarium of $300. The award is given annually to the technician who has been the most active in SE/AALAS branch events and business. Carter has been an active member by serving as the Web committee chairman and by presenting talks at various meetings.
Tina Pittman, animal care supervisor, won the Best Technician Presentation Award for her presentation “Once Upon a Time” about Xenopus frogs. The award—a plaque and an honorarium of $100—is presented to the winning speaker at the association’s annual meeting.

Steve D. Brown, associate director of Counseling and Psychological Services, received the 2002 Advocacy for College Counseling Award from the Georgia College Counseling Association. He has previously served as chair for Commission VII (Counseling and Psychological Services) of the American College Personnel Association and president of the Association
of University and College Counseling Center Directors. He has also been actively involved as a site visitor for the International Association of Counseling Services.

Louis Castenell
Louis A. Castenell Jr., acting associate provost for institutional diversity and dean of the College of Education, has been appointed to serve on the board of directors of the American Council on Education.
ACE is a comprehensive association of the nation’s colleges and universities dedicated to analysis of higher education issues and advocacy on behalf of quality higher education and adult education programs. Its membership includes approximately 1,600 accredited, degree-granting institutions and nearly 200 national and regional higher education associations and organizations.

Laura Shedenhelm of the Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection and Bartley Burk of Notre Dame are the
2002 recipients of the Best of LRTS Award, given to the authors of the best paper published each year in the official journal of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services, Library Resources and Technical Services.
Shedenhelm and Burk wrote “Book Vendor Records in the OCLC Database: Boon or Bane?,” which appeared in the January 2001 issue. Each of the papers published in the volume year is eligible for consideration.
LRTS supports the theoretical, intellectual, practical, and scholarly aspects of the profession of collection management and development, acquisitions, cataloging and classification, preservation and reformatting, and serials, by publishing articles (subject to double-blind peer review) and book reviews, and editorials and correspondence.

Kudos recognizes special contributions of staff, faculty and administrators in teaching, research and service. News items are limited to election into office of state, regional, national and international societies; major awards and prizes; and similarly notable accomplishments.
