College choice not affected by 9/11
A year after the Sept. 11 attacks a study found that students’ decisions about which college to attend this fall was affected more by the sluggish economy than by the events of Sept. 11. Nearly 40 percent of those surveyed said they looked at colleges that were closer to home and less expensive and 25 percent of students said their parents had talked to them about the state of the economy and how it might affect their ability to pay for tuition. Only 5 percent of students surveyed said that Sept. 11 affected their choice of college. The survey also indicated that students’ desire to study abroad has held steady and in some cases increased.

Biology courses lag behind research
Undergraduate biology education is falling behind research advances, according to a report issued by the National Research Council. The report argues that biology majors need stronger training in other areas, such as engineering and mathematics. In addition, colleges should offer undergraduates more opportunities to participate in research. The University of Arizona and Carnegie Mellon University are cited as leaders in biology curriculum.
