Law increases stem-cell research
Gov. Gray Davis of California signed a law allowing biomedical research conducted in the state to include work with embryonic stem cells from any source.
The law, which will go into effect Jan. 1, is different from the federal policy that was announced in August 2001 by the Bush administration. The Bush policy limits federal funding of embryonic stem cell research to existing lines of cells. The bills passage is expected to attract top researchers to California.
Report: Help prevent student suicides
College administrators are being urged to do more to prevent student suicides.
A report released by the National Mental Health Association is being sent to more than 3,000 colleges. It includes a checklist administrators should use to assess the quality of their colleges suicide-prevention efforts.
Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among college students, according to the report. The report also contains recommendations for upgrading current programs. One suggestion is to develop campus-wide suicide-prevention education.
