As outward advances of the urban fringe march on and problems arising from waste recycling and the concentration of animal production continue to pollute rivers and streams, instruction in how to manage natural resources has never been more urgent.
Bill Tollner, professor of biological and agricultural engineering, has written a new textbook, Natural Resources Engineering, which broadens the conventional definition of natural resource use from the usual oil/gas mining extraction activity to include crop production and development activities related to urbanization. It was published this past summer by Iowa State Press.
Written from an engineering design standpoint, the book stresses the clients interest while presenting qualitative overviews of the hydrologic cycle, precipitation and runoff, erosion, water quality and nonpoint pollution.
The book also looks ahead with the introduction of concepts such as watershed assessment, ecological engineering and bioremediation.
As a textbook to prepare tomorrows natural resource engineers, the volume defines these concepts but also discusses their prospects in a changing world where natural resource engineering is rapidly moving forward along with our knowledge of ecological processes. |
