Europeans keep researchers home
Research organizations in Europe are expected to approve a program of research grants intended to keep young scholars and scientists on the eastern side of the Atlantic. Lack of funding and rigid hiring-and-promotion policies in Europe have resulted in a high number of scholars and researchers choosing to study in the United States. The European Union Research Organizations Heads of Research Councils will administer the program, which is open to all disciplines, including the humanities and social sciences.
Whats in that potato salad?
Southern Foodways Alliance, an affiliated institute of the University of Mississippis Center for the Study of Southern Culture, held its first Coleslaw and Potato Invitational recently. They solicited family recipes and recollections of the two side dishes for a Barbecue: Smoke, Sauce and History food symposium. Entrants were surveyed about their preferences. Results: mayonnaise is the preferred dressing; potato salad is preferred to coleslaw.
The survey also identified the most unusual ingredients in coleslaw and potato salad, such as raisins.
