Spreading the wealth: University announces plans to buy, sell properties
The university or its real estate foundation will soon sell one parcel of property and purchase two others, in an ongoing effort to meet its educational mission and to address pressing needs under the physical master plan, officials announced last week.
We are sensitive to concerns about the removal of property from Clarke County tax rolls and will work closely with the local government to emphasize the positive impact these projects will bring to our community, says Henry M. Huckaby, senior vice president for finance and administration. We are making public announcement of these transactions in the interest of keeping the public and the local government fully informed of the universitys plans.
Four named Fellows by American Academy for Advancement of Science
Four UGA faculty members have been awarded the distinction of Fellow of the American Academy for the Advancement of Science this year. Election as a Fellow of AAAS is an honor bestowed upon members by their peers.
Marjorie Asmussen, David C.K. Chu, David A. Knauft and Henry F. Schaefer III are among the total of 291 new Fellows this year, elevated to this rank because of their efforts to advance science or foster applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished. New Fellows will be presented with an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin Feb. 15 during the 2003 AAAS annual meeting in Denver.

Open-enrollment period under way for health insurance
University employees and retirees have until Nov. 14 to make changes in their health insurance coverage for 2003.
The open enrollment period for adding, canceling or changing coverage began Oct. 14. During this period, active faculty and staff can make changes to medical and dental insurance plans, enroll for the Med-Flex and dependent-care programs, increase supplemental life insurance, apply for long-term disability coverage and enroll in supplemental retirement plans. Retirees can change their medical plan or cancel or remove members from the dental plan.

Hollowell to receive honorary degree at Commencement
The university will award an honorary degree to Donald L. Hollowell, the venerable Atlanta lawyer whose fights to integrate UGA, register African-American voters and combat racial discrimination made him an icon of the civil rights movement.
Hollowell will receive the honorary Doctor of Laws degree at UGAs fall semester undergraduate commencement exercises Dec. 21. He will be the 75th recipient of the degree which, after the earned doctorate, is the highest recognition UGA can bestow.
Best Chinese work of the 20th century: Shanghai Ballet performs its acclaimed White-Haired Girl
On Nov. 3 at 3 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre, local dance (and Chinese culture) enthusiasts will be able to see the Shanghai Ballet in a production of The White-Haired Girl. Tickets are $29-$33 and can be purchased in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center (542-4400).
