Dorm room searches
The New Hampshire Supreme Court ruled Dartmouth College campus police may search residence hall rooms without a search warrant. A Dartmouth College student was charged with marijuana possession after campus police searched the students room without a warrant. The ruling overturned the states district court ruling, finding that campus police acted independently for the safety of the college and accepting the argument that a student who chooses to live in campus housing agrees to such searches.
Disputed teaching approach
A finance professor at California State University at Chico has won a legal battle about his teaching style. Five years ago he gained attention when no students enrolled in any of the courses he was scheduled to teach. Although a review found the professor to be knowledgeable and resourceful, the business school dean asked him to develop a plan to improve his teaching style. The professor refused and was temporarily demoted. The 3rd Appellate District Court of California ruled that the schools demand was invalid. The university plans to ask the State Supreme Court to review the case.
