appointment is subject to approval by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents.
Wrigley has held the position on an interim basis since March 1. He has also continued to serve as vice president for government relations, a position he has held since July 2000.
President Michael F. Adams says the government relations position will be held vacant for the time being. He says Randy Powers, director of state relations, will oversee day-to-day government relations functions and report to Wrigley.
Dr. Wrigleys service in the interim appointment has been exemplary, as evidenced by the fact that despite the current economic hardships, the university had its largest fund-raising year in history with more than $62 million, says Adams. I value our professional relationship and the experienced leadership Dr. Wrigley brings to this critical position.
Adams says he made the appointment after consulting with the executive committees of the University Council and the University of Georgia Foundation.
This has been an exciting and productive year, and I am gratified and honored to be able to continue toward the goals we have before us, Wrigley says. To be able to work with the excellent team we have in External Affairs as well as my colleagues in the senior administration is a privilege and a wonderful opportunity.
As senior vice president, Wrigley oversees UGAs fund-raising and development programs. In addition to government relations, he also directs the departments responsible for alumni relations, public affairs, community relations, special events and career services.
Wrigley came to UGA in 1998 as the first director of the International Center for Democratic Governance, a unit of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. Under his leadership, the center--which assists the governments of emerging democracies--received nearly $900,000 in grants and contracts.
He has extensive international experience, including helping government administrations in the republic of Georgia, China and Ukraine, and providing technical assistance to the president of Macedonia.
Previously, he served 13 years in senior management positions in state government, including five years as chief of staff to former Gov. Zell Miller. He helped implement the HOPE Scholarship and pre-kindergarten programs and the Preservation 2000 program.
Wrigley received a bachelors degree from Georgia State University and masters and doctoral degrees from Northwestern University. He has led seminars for the National Governors Association on special events planning, media relations and managing a governors office.
He is on the board of directors of the Georgia Wildlife Federation and the Georgia Humanities Council.
