NCAA sets new academic standards
The National Collegiate Athletic Associations Division I board of directors approved changes in academic requirements for its athletes. The new standards are intended to improve the academic performance of athletes and increase eligibility of freshmen to compete. The new system, which will be implemented in August 2003, allows athletes to compete with an SAT score as low as 400 and a grade point average of 3.55 or higher in 14 core courses. Student athletes now must fulfill more of their college-degree requirements before the start of each academic year and attain a higher grade point average in those courses.
Elite schools drop early decision Yale University will drop its early-decision program, which requires a student to promise to attend if accepted, with applications for the 2004-2005 academic year. The university will implement a nonbinding early-action program that will forbid early applicants to Yale from applying early to other colleges. Stanford, Beloit College, Mary Washington College and UNC also have dropped their early-decision programs.
