His speech, sponsored by the Institute of Higher Education, is entitled Who Should Call the Tune in Higher Education? Notes from a Small Island and is scheduled for Nov. 20 at 1:30 p.m. in the Chapel. It is open to the public at no charge.
In addition to being president of Kellogg College, Thomas is director of the Oxford University department for continuing education. In that capacity he is responsible for the universitys lifelong learning and outreach opportunities, which embrace large numbers of part-time programs for the public, specialized courses for business, industry and the professions, and a wide range of programs for international groups. In addition, Kellogg College has a special emphasis on lifelong learning and part-time study and links with the wider community.
Thomas was educated as a physicist at the University of Wales and Cambridge University (at Churchill college and the Cavendish Laboratory). Much of his subsequent career has been in university teaching, especially teaching adults with little formal scientific background. His research interests and publications have included work on materials science, but most recently have concentrated on higher education and on the public understanding of science. He was co-director of the national inquiry in the United Kingdom into levels of public understanding of science, a project that subsequently helped shape similar surveys in other European countries. He is a member of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales.
Thomas has been a member of the Council of the British Association of the Advancement of Science and has been involved in a wide range of organizations devoted to continuing education and the application of science in industry. He has lectured widely in Europe, the United States and Japan, and has been a visiting scholar at various universities and research organizations in the United States, including Harvard University, the University of California at Berkeley and the Smithsonian Institution. In 2002 he was inducted into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame.
The Louise McBee Lectureship in Higher Education was established in 1988 in honor of the UGA vice president for academic affairs emerita. The annual lecture brings a distinguished scholar or public figure to campus to discuss higher education. |
