Spanish practice
The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies will present "Mesa de Conversacion," spoken Spanish practices, Feb. 26 and March 5 at 11:30 a.m. at the Georgia Museum of Art Cafe.
The topic for the Feb. 26 practice is "Cuentos de la Frontera: De padre a hijo: historia oral de un judio que inmigro." The topic for the March 5 practice is "Cuentos de la Frontera: Yo comenze mi viaje como inmigrante." For more information, call 542-9079.
Science writing
Faculty and students interested in science writing are invited to two informal meetings about the subject.
On Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. in Room 141 of the Tate Student Center, Roald Hoffmann, Nobel Prizewinning chemist and poet, will discuss his career as a poet and popular science writer. A faculty member at Cornell University, Hoffmann will deliver the winter quarter Charter Lecture Feb. 23 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel.
On March 3 Rebecca Chasan, editor-in-chief at Bioscience, and Ricki Lewis, author of several textbooks and a freelance writer for The Scientist, Discover magazine and other publications, will discuss science writing and editing. That talk is at 12:10 p.m. in Room 2507 of the Plant Sciences building.
Journal editors
The University Journal Editors Group will meet Feb. 26 at noon in the administrative conference room of the Main Library. University library system director William Potter will discuss the world of electronic journals from the perspective of a university librarian. The meeting is open to all who have a role in editing scholarly or professional journals on campus. Bring a lunch if you'd like. A dessert will be furnished.

High tea, fashion show
The University Woman's Club is holding a high tea and fashion show March 10 at 2 p.m. at the Athens Country Club. Tickets are $15. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will go to the UWC scholarship fund.
Administered by the University of Georgia Foundation, the fund supports the UWC's First Ladies Scholarship for undergraduate students and the Dianne C. Davison Scholarship for graduate students.

Affirmative action lecture
Jim Chen of the University of Minnesota Law School will discuss "Command Performance: The Soul of Diversity Under Affirmative Action" on Feb. 23 at 3:45 p.m. in Room F of the law school. The talk, open free to the public, is sponsored by the Federalist Society, a law student organization.
Adviser recognition
The Franklin College of Arts and Sciences is accepting nominations from undergraduate students until March 20 for an Outstanding Academic Advising Award.
Any professional or faculty adviser involved in advising undergraduates in the Franklin College may be nominated. Awards will be presented spring quarter to two individuals: one professional/staff adviser and one faculty adviser.
Nominations should include the nominee's name and department and whether they are a professional or faculty adviser. Nominators should provide reasons they believe the nominee should receive the award. Nominators also should include their name, address and telephone number along with the nomination.

Retirees on TV
The UGA Retirees Association will answer phones at the Georgia Public Television pledge drive on March 8 from 5 to 9 p.m. Participants will be outfitted in UGA T-shirts and some will be interviewed during pledge breaks. They invite the university community to tune in and to call them with pledges. For further information, call Paula Smith at 542-2251.
