Vice President for Legal Affairs Bryndis Roberts will leave the university at the end of February. Assistant Vice President Kimberly M. Ballard will serve as acting vice president for legal affairs.
Roberts last month began her tenth year as vice president, having held the post since the Office of Vice President for Legal Affairs was created by President Charles B. Knapp effective Jan. 1, 1989. She was special assistant to the president for legal affairs from August 1987 through December 1988.
"On behalf of the university community, I express our warm appreciation to Vice President Roberts for her many years of dedicated service, and wish her the best in her future endeavors," says President Michael F. Adams.
First black VP
Roberts was 31 when she became the university's first black vice president and was one of only two attorneys on the original four-person staff. With an increasing workload, the office grew to today's level of five attorneys and four full-time support staff.
As vice president, Roberts has been the university's point person on many legal and regulatory matters, such as employment issues, compliance with regulations for environmental and workplace safety, and serving as liaison with the attorney general on litigation involving the institution.
A native of Sylvania, Roberts grew up in Greenville, Ga. She earned her bachelor's degree magna cum laude from Wesleyan College in 1978 and her law degree cum laude from UGA in 1981. While she was in law school, she was executive editor of the Georgia Law Review and was named Outstanding Woman Law Student for 1981.
She was an assistant attorney general in the State Law Department from 1981 to 1987.
