Electronic portfolios
The University of Washington is ready to implement a new electronic portfolio system. Portfolio development has become a national issue, with Stanford University, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Minnesota and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology working together to develop some common tools to use with the portfolio system. The new system at the University of Washington is the first to be ready for use. Students will be able to put their digital creations into a personal file that can then be published on the Web. Some educators argue that student portfolios offer a better measure of how much students have learned than traditional GPAs.
Ideology influences Web site
Several education research groups are charging that the U.S. Department of Education is preparing to delete information from the departmental Web site on grounds of ideology. Members of the American Educational Research Association, the American Library Association and 12 other organizations claim the information is being deleted because the material does not reflect the philosophies of the Bush administration. The latest in a series of complaints against the administration, the groups claim the department is limiting information and research on specific issues. The press secretary for the education department has confirmed that the department is updating the information on its Web site but said the old information will be archived.
