Horney memorial gifts
Gifts in memory of Helen Horney, the mother of former UGA Provost Karen Holbrook, can be made to a fund in the UGA Foundation that Holbrook created to support undergraduate research.
Mrs. Horney, 93, died Dec. 15 of a heart attack at the Ohio State Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio. She had moved to Columbus after Holbrook became president of Ohio State University last October.
“The university community is saddened by the death of Mrs. Horney, whom we had come to know with great fondness during the time our friend Karen Holbrook was here,” says President Michael F. Adams. “Many members of the community have expressed interest in making a memorial gift for Mrs. Horney.”
Gifts can be made to the Karen A. Holbrook CURO Academic Support Fund at UGA. Holbrook created the fund in 2001 to support the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities, which encourages UGA undergraduates to conduct research as part of their learning experience. The fund provides an annual award to help a student conduct research in the biomedical sciences, or to help students travel to present or conduct research off campus.
Checks should be made to the University of Georgia Foundation and earmarked for the Holbrook CURO Fund in memory of Mrs. Horney. Checks can be sent to the UGA Foundation, 824 S. Milledge Ave., Athens, GA 30602.

Public service conference
The annual Public Service and Outreach Conference will be held Jan. 29, 8:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m., at the Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Titled “Seeing and Serving the New Faces of Georgia,” the conference is intended to sharpen the faculty’s focus on changes in the state in order to better serve its people.
Alf Nucifora, a marketing consultant and nationally syndicated columnist, will present the keynote address. His syndicated column, “Shoestring Marketing,” appears weekly in more than 60 business publications. Nucifora will paint a portrait of Georgia as it is becoming—distinct from the Georgia that marketers have mistakenly assumed it to be.
The general session will present the results of the Peach State Poll and will be led by Rich Clark of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government. Concurrent sessions will focus on the implications of the “new faces of Georgia.”
University System of Georgia Chancellor Thomas C. Meredith has been invited to speak at the conference luncheon. The 2003 Walter Barnard Hill Awards will be presented at the luncheon.
The annual conference is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Public Service and Outreach. The registration fee is $30. To register, or for more information, contact Al Henderson (542-2237; Al_Henderson@gactr.uga.edu).

King Day program in Atlanta
Interested members of the university community are invited to travel with a group of UGA Honors students to the Carter Library in Atlanta on Martin Luther King Jr. Day for a National Issues Forum briefing on the topic of “Racial and Ethnic Tensions: What Should We Do?” Four students who serve as peer advisers in the Honors Program will talk about their experiences leading forums on this topic with first-year Honors students during fall semester. More than 400 UGA students in the Honors Program participated in the forums, which were among those that took place across the country.
A bus will leave from the Tate Center at 8 a.m. on Jan. 20 for the briefing at 10 a.m., which will be followed by a tour of the Library (where Jimmy Carter’s Nobel Prize is now on display), a box lunch and an afternoon stop at the King National Historic Site. Anyone wishing to ride the bus and/or eat lunch with the group must make a reservation with Gina Woods (gwoods@uga.edu) by the end of the day on Jan. 13.
As part of the program at the Carter Library, John Doble of Doble Research Associates will present findings from questionnaires completed by more than 3,500 participants in the National Issues Forum on race. An additional presentation will be made by Linton Mann III, a sophomore political science major from Marietta, who has worked with UGA’s Survey Research Center on recent statewide polls involving questions on the new state flag and affirmative action. Mann is involved with UGA’s Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities, which offers undergraduates a chance to engage in research work with faculty.

UGA license plates
All state of Georgia vehicle license plates, including the commemorative UGA series, will be reissued upon renewal on the vehicle owner’s birthday during calendar 2004. Persons desiring the UGA special plate should apply between Jan. 1 and July 31, 2003, at their local county tag office. Those already having UGA tags in the current series should return to their county tag office the renewal letter received from the state Department of Motor Vehicle Safety. Those who do not now have the tag may apply using form MV-9C, available on the Web at www.dmvs.ga.gov/forms/. A $25 manufacturing fee should accompany the application.

Finals exam schedule
The schedule for spring final exams has been changed from the originally published schedule in order to alleviate conflicts among the more heavily scheduled class periods. The amended exam schedule for spring term 2003 may be viewed at www.reg.uga.edu/or.nsf/public/springkeydates?OpenDocument#Final%20Exam%20Schedule.

Radio commentaries
WUGA-FM 91.7/97.9 is seeking volunteer contributions for its weekly commentary series, “From All Sides.” The three-minute commentaries are broadcast on Fridays at 4:30 p.m. If you want to write about a specific issue of community or university concern in which you have expertise, or you have a human interest story to tell, please send your essays to WUGA for consideration. The essays should be no longer than two typed pages, double-spaced. For information, contact Mary Kay Mitchell (542-1939; wuga@gactr.uga.edu).

Lilly Fellows deadline
The deadline for applications and nominations for the 2003–04 Lilly Teaching Fellows program is March 3.
The program, established in 1984, is designed to provide up to 10 junior tenure-track faculty members with an opportunity to enhance their teaching skills by sharing teaching strategies, by interacting with senior faculty mentors who are outstanding teachers, and by designing and implementing instructional projects to strengthen each Fellow’s courses and teaching methods.
Candidates must be in their first, second or third year at UGA and have demonstrated a strong commitment to teaching and the improvement of teaching. Approximately 20 applicants will be selected for personal interviews; up to 10 Fellows will be selected from that group.
Application and nomination forms are available on the Web (www.isd.uga.edu/faculty/lilly.html) or from the Office of Instructional Support and Development (542-1355).

Benefits overview sessions
Effective immediately, benefits overview sessions for new faculty and staff will be held twice per month, on the first and third Mondays, 9–10:30 a.m. If the session falls on a scheduled UGA holiday, it will be held the next working day. No registration is required to attend.
New faculty and staff with benefits questions are encouraged to attend a benefits overview session within 31 days of employment to meet enrollment deadlines. Prior to attending the benefits overview session, new faculty and staff should participate in online orientation (www.busfin.uga.edu/staff/orient.html) to receive employment forms and policies, required Right to Know training and a summary of benefits options.
Contact Employee Benefits (542-1814) with questions, or visit the Benefits Web site (www.hr.uga.edu) for more information.

Dialing long distance
The Georgia Technology Authority has changed the procedure for dialing long-distance from state telephones, including those at the university.
Formerly, dialing a long-distance telephone number required dialing 8 to enter the GIST (Georgia Interactive Statewide Telephone) system, and dialing the area code and phone number after the signal. The GIST system is no longer available.
Now, long-distance callers should dial 9 + 1 + area code and phone number. After dialing, the caller must enter a long-distance authorization code, as in the old system.
For further information, call the UGA Telephone Services Office at 542-6962.

WebCT workshops
The Office of Instructional Support and Development and Enterprise Information and Technology Services will offer a series of free WebCT workshops for UGA faculty, teaching assistants and instructional support staff during spring semester. Visit the WebCT homepage at webct.uga.edu and select workshops, under faculty resources, for more information about workshop times and registration. All workshops are offered in room 275 of the journalism building. For more information contact OISD (542-1355; isd@uga.edu).

Weight Watchers group
A new UGA Weight Watchers group will be meeting beginning this month. Cost is $159 for 16 weeks. Meetings are held at noon on Wednesdays in Aderhold Hall. Contact Heidi Sartain (hsartain@uga.edu) with questions. All faculty, staff and students are welcome.
