IRP considers changes in operational procedures
By Larry B. Dendy

As a search gets under way for a new director of the Office of Institutional Research and Planning, a number of changes in the offices operational procedures and priorities are under consideration following a review by an external panel.
The office now reports to Bob Boehmer, associate provost for institutional effectiveness, and will play a key role in the universitys new approach to institutional effectiveness.
Following the retirement of long-time director David Clements this past November, day-to-day operations are being overseen by associate director Robin Hawkins and assistant director Tracie Sapp while a national search is conducted for a new director. The search began in December, and Boehmer hopes the new director can begin work in August.
Boehmer brought in a three-person team of experts to review IRPs mission, operating policies and procedures. The teams report includes recommendations covering such areas as leadership and management within the office, staff development, the offices operational priorities and its relationship with other campus units.
Boehmer also formed a 15-member advisory board composed of faculty and staff members whose offices frequently use IRP services. He said the board will help choose the new director and also will provide guidance in implementing the review panels recommendations.
The entire university looks to Institutional Research and Planning as the most accurate and reliable source of data for all aspects of university operations, and the office has a diligent and dedicated staff who perform admirably under an enormous work load, Boehmer says. Our goal is to build upon this foundation. We intend to develop an institutional research office that is more actively involved in analytical activities--anticipating key trends in higher education and assisting UGA in meeting its strategic goals.
