Book offers postcard view of Athens

A Postcard History of Athens, Georgia $30
By Gary L. Doster
Athens Historical Society

Historians only recently have begun to recognize and appreciate the historical value of old picture postcards. Fortunately, collectors long have been attracted to these relics of the past and have saved and preserved many of them. From 1903 to 1918 large postcard companies as well as individuals produced millions of postcards to satisfy the demand by collectors. Photographic equipment manufacturers went so far as to produce special film and cameras for people to make their own picture postcards. Thus, images of many churches, depots, schools and other buildings and scenes that were not photographed before or after were inadvertently preserved for posterity. A Postcard History of Athens, Georgia, is primarily a postcard history of Athens and UGA as they evolved concurrently during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Written by Gary Doster, an education program specialist with the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study, the book serves as a testimony to the historical importance of old postcards. A lifelong collector of Georgia memorabilia, Doster has accumulated more than 10,000 early Georgia picture postcards, the largest such collection in existence.
