College applicant writing exam Students applying to college will soon see a new section added to the ACT and SAT--a writing exam. Beginning in 2004 the ACT will include a writing exam, with the SATs appearing in 2005.
The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and the University of Texas at Austin decided they will require all undergraduate applicants to take one of these writing exams beginning in spring 2005. Applicants to both universities currently have to submit an essay with the application. Students will be able to take either the ACT or SAT but must complete the writing portion whether it is a mandatory part of the exam or not.
More higher ed cuts in California California Gov. Gray Davis has proposed a new budget for the 2003-04 fiscal year that would cut spending on higher education.
If the budget is approved, students would pay twice as much for classes, and day-to-day operational expenses, such as faculty and staff pay and equipment maintenance, would be cut. Universities also would experience cuts in research, libraries, student services, professional-development programs for teachers and administration.
